The Wild Isle of Mull – An Island of Eagles
I grew up in the middle of nowhere. I love wildlife and photography.
Two years ago, Lisa asked me what I wanted to do for my 40th birthday…
Not being really sure I casually replied “to photograph White Tailed Sea Eagles somewhere?’
A bit random I know but two years later and…
The Isle of Mull is a beautifully wild island on the West coast of Scotland.
After a short evening ferry from Oban, we had an hours drive to a little house with its own beach in the middle of nowhere, which we had booked for a week just as the sun was setting. Wow!

Beautiful landscape photography
The beautiful cottage in Croggan has just the best views to the West in the world and our own beach at the end of the garden just made it perfect!
It only rained twice in a week… but even that just created a more beautiful and dramatic landscape.
Plus I love big moody skies! We actually came back with tans after being on the beach most nights until about 9pm.
The view from the lounge was just magnificent!
I wanted to photograph Sea Eagles so after a recommendation from another wildlife photographer, I got in touch with Martin from Mull Charters and booked a place on his boat. I was told to meet them at the Ulva ferry port and with no knowledge of the island of Ulva I arrived expecting a huge ferry and a bustling hub of American tourists. I thankfully could not have been more wrong! What I found was the most beautiful and tranquil inlet with a passenger ferry that can probably transport around 15 people at a time and views only found in Scotland.
Martin, the skipper usual sails with his son but for the week we were there his son was not and so the boat was being crewed by Oliver Wright instead.
Not only is Martin, the skipper, an amazing photographer but it turns out that Oliver is one of the UK’s best wildlife and landscape photographers too and spends half his year in Sweden working as a photography guide.

On the boat we started heading down Loch Na Keal rounding the small island of Erosa when the shout came… “EAGLE”! And in the distance, we saw it! A lone female out hunting.
She came in close to see what the boat was doing and then BANG…. she dived straight down and plucked a large fish from the sea in her magnificent talons.
